Rabaa Gadaa USA Vision and Mission
1. Name
The name of the organization shall be Raaba Gadaa USA (RGU)
2. Preamble
The Borana community in the USA is part of the larger Oromo community that originated from Oromiya, Ethiopia, and Kenya. This community has an internationally recognized socio- economic support structure within Gadaa System, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage. However, it has proven to be difficult for those in the diaspora, including the USA, to benefit from this structure and positively participate in the affairs of their society back home (Southern Ethiopia and Northern Kenya). Thus, the Borana community in the USA recognizes a need to establish a vibrant national civic structure in the USA to provide the missing socio-economic supports to our members and connect with our society back home. While there is no shortage of willing individuals with the talent and motivation to realize our vision, it requires a platform that brings them together and mobilizes for the good of the community. Nevertheless, due to the lack of such a platform, there is a considerable gap to support each other and positively contribute to the larger society. Thus, the establishment of RGU is an effort to create the needed platform and fill the existing gap.
3. VisionStatement:
RGU is a non-political and non-religious community with a vision to create an inclusive platform that brings our resources under a common umbrella. The overall RGU vision addresses a socio-economic issue within the Borana community in diaspora and back home while promoting Borantiti and embracing our culture and values.
4. Mission Statement:
GRU’s mission is to establish a sustainable self-help structure for timely and effective response to socio-economic issues that arise among our community in diaspora, positively participate in the affairs of our society back home (Southern Ethiopia and Northern Kenya), and create a viable bond with our roots.
